Question
I am a Tunisian citizen and have previously been issued French Schengen business visas twice.
My most recent visa was a **6-month multiple-entry (MULT) French Schengen business visa**, which I used correctly. During its validity, I made several trips to France, including three visits to Nantes, and returned to Tunisia after each trip. I had no overstays, border issues or other problems.
I have now been issued another **6-month multiple-entry French business visa**. The business purpose for which I applied is genuine, and my actual business trip to Paris is scheduled for **12 October**.
However, I would like to enter the Schengen Area earlier, on **16 September**, and travel to Nantes to visit my girlfriend. This September trip would be entirely **private/personal**, with no business activity involved. I would stay with her and return to Tunisia before travelling again for my planned business trip to Paris in October.
My question is:
**Can I legally use my valid French multiple-entry Schengen business visa to make this first entry for a private/personal visit, even though the business trip for which the visa was issued will take place later during the visa's validity period?**
In particular:
* Does a **multiple-entry Schengen visa issued for business purposes** permit subsequent entries for other legitimate short-stay purposes, such as visiting a partner or tourism?
* At the French border, could I be refused entry because my first trip is personal rather than business-related?
* Should I carry evidence explaining my September private visit, such as my girlfriend's address/invitation, return ticket to Tunisia, travel insurance and proof of sufficient funds?
* Does the fact that I have previously used French Schengen visas correctly and always returned to Tunisia make any difference?
* Has anyone had a similar experience using a French MULT business visa for a private visit before a later business trip?
I am particularly interested in the **legal position under the EU Visa Code and Schengen Borders Code**, rather than only personal experiences.

Possibly yes, but it is not risk-free. A valid MULT Schengen visa is not, by itself, limited to only the purpose of the first trip. The Visa Code expressly provides for multiple-entry visas and requires the holder to meet the entry conditions for each intended stay.
However, at the external border, French border authorities can check the purpose and conditions of the particular trip you are undertaking at that time and whether you have sufficient means and satisfy the other entry conditions. The Schengen Borders Code expressly allows border guards to examine the purpose of the intended stay and supporting documents.
The important distinction is that “business visa” describes the circumstances under which the visa was issued; “multiple-entry” means you can make multiple short stays during its validity, provided you continue to satisfy the Schengen entry conditions. The Visa Code itself lists business and private/tourism travel separately as possible purposes of travel and requires the purpose and conditions of the intended stay to be justified.
So, for your 16 September private trip, I would carry evidence of the genuine personal visit: accommodation/invitation from your girlfriend, return/onward ticket to Tunisia, adequate funds, and valid travel medical insurance. Those documents directly address the border officer's ability to verify the purpose and conditions of your stay.
Your previous compliant use of French visas is also relevant context: the Visa Code specifically says that, when granting long-validity multiple-entry visas, authorities consider the applicant's lawful use of previous visas and reliability.
One caution: I would not describe the September trip to the border officer as a business trip when it is actually private. Be completely truthful that the September visit is personal and that you have a genuine business trip planned for October. A valid visa does not guarantee admission; the border officer still assesses the entry conditions for that particular trip.
